The Dutch Government has created a fund to apologize for their historic role in slavery. From 1596 to 1829, the Dutch took part in transporting nearly a half a million Africans across the Atlantic Ocean. The fund is set to be announced after the nation officially apologizes for its role by the end of this year or the beginning of 2023. It is said that the fund may be as large as 200 million euros. Additionally, European Central Bank Governing Council member Klaas Knot, who is also president of the bank, addressed his apology to the descendants of enslaved people and set up a fund to finance projects worth 5 million euros over the next 10 years in the Netherlands, Suriname and the Caribbean.

Family and Friends….I got some exciting news for you!! I have a chapter featured in the latest collectionTeaching with Comics: Empirical, Analytical and Professional Experiences (2022) (Palgrave Macmillan) !!
Here is a brief description of the book:
This edited collection analyses the use of comics in primary and secondary education. The editors and contributors draw together global research to examine how comics can be used for critical inquiry within schools, and how they can be used within specific disciplines. As comics are beginning to be recognised more widely as an important resource for teaching, with a huge breadth of topics and styles, this interdisciplinary book unites a variety of research to analyse how learning is ‘done’ with and through comics. The book will be of interest to educational practitioners and school teachers, as well as students and scholars of comic studies, education and social sciences more broadly.

This past week on August 21st, a group of Black women made history at the U.S. Gymnastics Championship in Tampa, FL…Konnor McClain (17), Shilese Jones (20), and Jordan Chiles (21) grabbed the top 3 spots in the all-around competition. Black Brewers are changing the Washington, DC landscape of craft beer!! To date DC has three Black-owned breweries, making up 20% of the city’s total of 15 (Sankofa Beer Company [2018], Soul Mega [2018], and Urban Garden Brewing [2021]). Along with these breweries making their mark, DC Black beer fans can also bridge the brewery gap and build community through the Black Brew Movement. Our nation’s capital is shaping up to be another prime location for Black owned breweries. DC is truly taking a leading role with other Black-owned breweries in such places as Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and neighboring state Maryland. Who says representation does not matter in the beer game?!

Nothing like a new television series to take you back to your childhood days!!
During last month’s San Diego Comic Con there were several major announcements made and trailers revealed!! Two in particular that stopped me in my tracks were of course the trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and the trailer for the much anticipated animated series Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur!! With Moon Girl (Lunella Lafayette) being deemed as one of the smartest people in the Marvel Universe, this is prime content for little girls (especially little Black girls) who are interested in the STEM field. As a follower and reader of the comic (even wrote a chapter in my dissertation about her), I am truly hyped to see this hit the television screens!!
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur follows the adventures of 13-year-old Lunella (voiced by Diamond White) and her 10-ton T-rex, Devil Dinosaur (voiced by Fred Tatasciore). Additionally, the main cast includes Alfre Woodard as Lunella’s grandmother, Mimi, Libe Barer as Lunella’s best friend/manager, Casey, Sasheer Zamata as Lunella’s mom, Adria, Jermaine Fowler as Lunella’s dad, James Jr., Gary Anthony Williams as Lunella’s grandfather, Pops, and executive producer Laurence Fishburne as The Beyonder,
Also announced at San Diego Comic Con, the legendary Raphael Saadiq will serve as the executive music producer for the show.
To get a little taste of the series and Lunella, Casey and Devil Dinosaur prepare for their mission in New York City’s Lower East Side, check out the teaser trailer below:
In addition to the lead roles, the series is is set to feature the following star power guests: Alison Brie, Andy Cohen, Daveed Diggs, Maya Hawke, Jennifer Hudson, Wilson Cruz, Method Man, Asia Kate Dillon, Cobi Smulders, Wesley Snipes, and more. Additionally the following actors will have recurring roles: Omid Abtahi, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Michael Cimino, Indya Moore and Craig Robinson.
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is set to premiere on the Disney Channel and Disney+ in 2023!! Looking forward to this animated goodness!!
Two Icons …. Two Amazing People …. Two people who changed the game!! I will forever be inspired!! #NichelleNichols #BillRussell #StarTrek #Uhura #Celtics #TheGOAT #Activist #BlackExcellence #RestInParadise🙏🏾
For all those who were hovering the social media timelines waiting to see what would drop at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, no need to wait any longer!! Marvel Studios officially dropped this teaser trailer for the much anticipated Black Panther: Wakanda Forever!! I could not just drop this one in the regular listing of new trailers, this needed a post ALL BY ITSELF!!
From the opening moment, with a remix version of Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry” and Nakia standing on Wakandan shores deep in thought. The only lines spoken are from Queen Ramonda (played by Angela Bassett) and they are full of emotions. It is literally like a musical motion picture, with featured moments. We see several return characters including Okoye and Ayo, Shuri (with a new haircut…I like!!), Nakia, M’baku, Agent Ross and some new faces one particular that I am siked about RiRi Williams/Ironheart (played by Dominique Thorne), Aneka (played by Michaela Coel), and a first glimpse at the film’s villain, Namor (played by Tenoch Huerta). What this teaser trailer does well is project the future not just of one the MCU’s most advanced nation, but of the Black/African diaspora!!
And this trailer would not be complete without a shout out to T’Challa!!
Literal chills up and down my spine!! Patiently waiting….But Sooooo Ready for this one!!
Check out the new poster as well!!
